Online casino transition

New Zealand is building a new online casino framework.

This is a dated regulatory guide, not a list of offshore casinos. We will add operators only when a primary New Zealand source supports the listing.

  1. 1 May 2026Transition rules apply to operators that previously served New Zealand.
  2. 1 December 2026The current transition changes; check DIA for the live position.
  3. Early 2027DIA expects the first licences under the new framework.

Online casino NZ: is it legal right now?

Online casino gambling in NZ is in transition under the Online Casino Gambling Act 2026. DIA says operators that served New Zealand before 1 May 2026 may continue until 1 December 2026, while online casino advertising remains prohibited during this transition. This is not a list of locally licensed casinos. The new framework is being implemented.

What changes for online casinos in NZ on 1 December 2026

DIA expects up to 15 operators to obtain the right to apply after auction, with a different operating position from 1 December 2026 and licences expected from early 2027. An application, auction position or exemption is not an issued licence. Check the official guidance for changes.

Why there are no offshore casino offers here

We do not turn foreign licences, NZD support or a familiar name into a claim of New Zealand authorisation. This page provides regulatory context and does not advertise offshore casino accounts or welcome deals.

What a useful comparison should include

When a public licence register is available, match the company and domain to it. Read the exact withdrawal, identity-checking and complaint terms. Do not treat a future licensing announcement as a reason to deposit now.

Online and land-based rules differ

The minimum entry age for a New Zealand land-based casino is 20. That should not be confused with sports betting or the online casino framework. DIA’s casino information explains the land-based context.

Frequently asked questions

Can New Zealanders legally play at online casinos in 2026?

Only in transition: operators that served New Zealand before 1 May 2026 may continue until 1 December 2026, according to the DIA. This transition runs under the Online Casino Gambling Act 2026, and online casino advertising remains prohibited during it. Being allowed to continue is not the same as holding a New Zealand licence, and an application, auction position or exemption is not an issued licence either.

What happens to online casinos in New Zealand after 1 December 2026?

The DIA expects a different operating position from 1 December 2026, with up to 15 operators obtaining the right to apply after an auction. Licences under the new framework are expected from early 2027. Until a licence is actually issued, an application, auction position or exemption should not be read as New Zealand authorisation, so check the DIA’s official guidance for changes.

How many operators can apply for a New Zealand online casino licence?

Up to 15, according to the DIA, which expects that many operators to obtain the right to apply after an auction. Licences are expected from early 2027 under the Online Casino Gambling Act 2026. Winning an auction position or applying is not the same as holding an issued licence, so New Zealand players should check the official DIA guidance for each operator’s current status.

What is the legal age for casinos in New Zealand?

The minimum entry age for a New Zealand land-based casino is 20. That rule should not be confused with sports betting, where TAB betting is for adults aged 18 and over, or with the separate online casino framework now being implemented. The Department of Internal Affairs explains the land-based casino context and publishes current information for players on online gambling.
